Being a Home Worker in a Home Business

by Mary Emma Allen on May 12th, 2007

When I worked at a sewing and quiltmaking business at home,  one of my customers hired me to make patchwork pillows, wrap-around skirts and placemats.  She was in the process of developing a market for these and other items and wanted me to make her samples.  Then I began to fill her orders.  When Suzanne had more orders than I could keep up with, she asked if I knew of anyone else who could sew for her.

Suzanne had the design and marketing expertise but didn’t want to be tied down with the sewing.  So she hired others to make her products in their homes.  At this period in her business, she operated it from her summer home in New Hampshire (where I live) and her winter home in Florida.

Eventually Suzanne developed such a demand for her products she took on a partner and opened a shop in Florida, purchased sewing machines and other equipment.  Then she hired seamstresses to work from there.  She had evolved form home based to a larger enterprise.

Some home business owners have a large building on their property, or can build one, where they can move their business when it outgrows their home.  Others look for something to rent/lease nearby.  Some may even merge with another business.

There are advantages and disadvantages of expanding into larger quarters and ceasing to use homeworkers.  Some businesses continue to have people produce the products in their homes as contract workers.  It all depends on what you want for your business, your family, and your life.  However, the possibilities are there to take your business in different directions.

For me, the work ended when Suzanne expanded, but sewing for her had been an enjoyable experience and gave me insight into possibilities for my home business.
