Check Out Dr. Jean Murray, Surgery & Business
October 28, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen
Dr. Jean Murray, whose “swipe” file tips I published recently, has written a post, Keep Your Small Business Going After Surgery, at Small Business Boomers that may be of interest. Jean’s small business actually is a home business, so her suggestions on keeping her business going should prove helpful.
Many of us will encounter illnesses, disabilities, whether short term or long. Jean’s was knee replacement surgery, and she’s looking at having the second knee done in November. She should find her own tips helpful in preparing for this next surgery.
If you’ve encountered illness or surgery, how did you manage your business?
Will Home Business Owners Be Affected by Obamacare Government Parenting
August 20, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen
Many home business owners are parents or grandparents. They, like I, develop home businesses so they can be home with their children, yet still help earn the family’s living. Will they be scrutinized because they’re parents?
Upon close scrutiny, you’ll find within the Obamacare proposals government parenting and grandparenting. Home visits by government/state agents are indicated, whereby representatives will be able to “advise” those involved in children’s care on how to raise them. This is under the guise of “health care.”
What we all wonder…are these simply suggestions? Or will those raising children be required to follow the state’s agents’ advice. Will this advice …read more
Will Obamacare Affect Home Businesses?
August 13, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen
As discussion increases about the health care bills proposed by Congress and pushed by President Obama to control the care Americans receive, home business people are wondering how this will affect them and invade their lives.
It will affect them personally and businesswise. Different bills (and Obama’s yet to be announced version) present different levels of control over the health care we would receive. Also, there would be much more invasion of our lives, as just about all information about us could be collected at a central government location. Small businesses and individuals would be penalized if they don’t carry health insurance, and of …read more

Sleep On It – Science Explains Why
July 28, 2008 by Yvonne Russell
We all know we need more sleep. Scientific American explains the how and the why in an interesting series of articles about sleep.
It explains the benefits of sleep for memory retention. Being sharp is essential for making good decisions for your business and family.
A lack of sleep over a prolonged period can lead to obesity and heart problems. And for workaholics, morning sleep and afternoon naps can aid mental and physical learning.
An article entitled You Snooze, You Win explains
The intensity of learning new skills and information may drive the brain’s hunger for large amounts of sleep,” Walker remarks. He adds …read more

July 21, 2008 by Mary Emma Allen
HomeBizNotes.com

So, if you live in an area where these laws are in effect or will be adopted, you’ll have to consider the calorie count.
Do you supply baked goods for restaurants and …read more

June 20, 2008 by Mary Emma Allen

“Life happens,” someone has said. No matter how hard we try, there are “down” times. These may not be full fledged bouts of depression, simply what we used to call “the blues,” when it was difficult to be enthusiastic, even a business you basically enjoy.
I’ve frequently noticed that Anna at Widow’s Quest hosts a Carnival of Positive Thinking with links to numerous posts that may help you.

June 5, 2008 by Mary Emma Allen
HomeBizNotes.com
With summer approaching (in the Northern Hemisphere), we begin to pull our shorts and bathing suits out of the closet and see if we can can fit into them. If they’re a bit snug (or a lot snug) we begin thinking of losing a few pounds.
We’re not obese, but want to be comfortable in our clothes, can breathe without puffing up the stairs, can work comfortably in our home business or can dash easily if we have to chase after a wandering child.
Also, by losing some of those pounds, we may be helping the environment and cutting down on global …read more
