Home Business with Children
June 1, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen
With summer vacation from school upon us, parents with home based businesses must juggle these tasks along with child caring ones. If the youngsters are older, they can care for themselves and even help you in your business. When they’re younger, they tend to be underfoot so you need to learn how to be productive regardless.
*If your youngsters take naps, you may find this an ideal time for working. However, you must be well organized so that you can be productive during this time and not waste it with unrelated tasks.
*Perhaps you can involve your children in projects in the room where you are working. While I was sewing dresses and quilts, my daughter often took my scrap bag of fabrics and pretended she was making clothes for her dolls and stuffed animals. As she grew older, she actually cut and sewed these scraps while I worked.
*The summer when she was four years old, we had a small swimming pool in our backyard, where Beth and her cousins played in the afternoon. I would organize my work so I could do hand sewing or writing while I watched the children.
*Some parents hire babysitters or take the children to daycare for specific times and get work done then. In this instance, too, you should be well organized and spend your time working, not doing housework or running errands, unless absolute necessary.
*One friend, who set up her at home business to be with her young daughter, decided to use daycare three mornings a week. During that time, she worked on her quilted vest business rather than doing housework or other tasks unrelated to her business.
How have you managed to find time for your home business with children at home?
