Welcome to my office! As you can see, there is a lot going on in this room, and not just because my husband and I are sharing a space. I have a whole lot of stuff! I adore my desk and shelves, which I designed and my husband built for me. (We got all of the materials from Lowe’s for under $250 and put it together in an evening.)
For Jen’s Spring Cleaning Challenge, I’ve committed to filing this little box of papers I’ve been avoiding for the last several months – but what I really want to do is cut my collection of books and papers down by about 50% to reduce the clutter in my workspace. I’d also like to put some better organizational systems in place to manage books and products I need to review and to process bills and other paperwork that comes through the office.
What’s your office setup? Do you have a system that works for you? Leave a comment!

Thanks for inviting me to guest post, Mary Emma and Yvonne! This was fun!

Hi Kristen
It was great to have you guest post for us… loved the video.
May I steal your ideas? Great layout! It feels organized AND roomy. Despite my study being decent sized, I always feel boxed in. I’m going to take notes!
Hi Lori
Great to see you here. April is Productivity month at Home Biz Notes. With all this talk about productivity and offices, I’ve started revamping mine too.
Let us know what changes you make to yours.
@Lori – You might want to wait to make any major changes, because I’m in the midst of refining things as we speak. I’ll do another video when I’m finished.
You’ll be able to find it at http://www.bizchicksrule.com
this is so cool…you look so young! i feel so behind…haha…great idea though!
Hi Kristen
Looking forward to seeing the video of the revamp of the revamp.
@Nicole – Yeah, I look great for 60, right? Just kidding. Yes, I’m quite young. I recently turned 26.
@Yvonne – It will rock your socks!
Awe, look at you Kristen! You’re so cute. I’m envious of your office. I had to give mine up in November (sudden move) and I’ve been working out of a little space in a bedroom corner that’s, oh, about four feet wide and five feet long, lol! I love your huge bookshelf! And I’m glad you didn’t clean up the doggy toys – I myself have to watch out for a variety of animal whatnots when I get up to walk around, haha.
Thanks for being our guest at Home Biz Notes, Kristen. I enjoyed seeing your office. This gives me the incentive for clearing up my spaces. I have to share various spaces and must get better organized. It also was neat to see a picture of you. We’ve been blogging colleagues for quite awhile, so it’s nice to have a face and voice to put with our correspondence.
@Alicia – Thanks, sweetie. I’m sorry you’re feeling cramped right now. I know the feeling. I’m still getting used to having my own space! It hasn’t always been this nice.
@Mary Emma – I agree! It’s fun to be able to see and hear the friends we’ve known for so long.
Wow, Kristen – this is BRAVE! I am wondering to myself if I’d have the courage to do the same! Your space IS cute – and your 50% decluttering goal is admirable. Can’t wait to see the next video!
Thanks, Jennifer, for stopping by. Wasn’t this a really neat idea for a guest post that Kristen had?
@Jen – Your encouragement and support has been VERY empowering.
Thank you!
@Mary Emma – You make me blush! Stop it! No, wait, don’t stop. I like it.
Kristen,
Thanks for sharing your office with us. Wish I had a space that big–even if I did have to share it. Since I live in a rather small apartment, my “office” is a corner of my living room, which means my writing space is also my teenaged son’s video game-playing and DVD-watching space. (He’s really good, though, about setting the volume far lower than he’d like it when I’m writing so I can concentrate; and thankfully, it’s not an everyday occurrence.)
Great post!
Jeanne
You’re getting into this whole video deal huh. I like your shelves above, but that might distract me. I also can’t believe you have the shelves, bookshelf, file cabinet and extra space in the corner. Wow. That’s a lot of office, I can see why you’ve been sorting. I share my office with a seven year old, he’s sort of accommodating, but I bet louder than your hubs. Great video.
Thanks, everyone for stopping by and checking out Kristen’s office and video…and for sharing your thoughts about office space. It seems, when we’re determined, writers can write anywhere.
The past 10 days I’ve been doing a lot of writing in the hospital while visiting my daughter. The first day, as a result of rushing to the emergency room, I didn’t have any paper with me. So I pulled some paper towels from the dispenser and wrote my weekly cooking column as I waited.
