The Power of a “Smiley Face” in Business
August 13, 2008 by Mary Emma Allen
As I stood in line at the grocery check-out today, I observed the power of a “smiley face.” The couple ahead of us had a little girl with them, about five years old, I’d guess. She was well-behaved, but chatty and wiggly.
As her dad taked with the bag boy and her mom wrote a check, the cashier took one of those round stickers they place on large items you’ve paid for but don’t put into bags, and drew a smiley face on it. Then she handed it to the little girl.
“For me?”
“Yes,”
“Momma, look! A smiley face!” Her face lit up with a grin as she stuck it to her dress.
I imagine the little girl will remember this and definitely want Momma to shop again at this grocery. I don’t know whether this is store policy or whether it was something the cashier does. (I’ve never seen anyone do this and I shop there frequently.)
It was a simple gesture, but made a happy child. Creating happy children, as well as happy customers, usually means repeat business.
What little gestures have you put into place to brighten your customers’ day. You at least can put a SMILE on your face!
