The Realities of Blogging as a Home Business

November 1, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen

Once you’ve entered the blogging world, you’ve probably heard about those who make a living simply blogging or mainly from blogging.  This seems such an easy way to keep the dollars rolling in, you might think.

However, some of the realities present a different story.  Yes, it is possible, but very, very rarely do you achieve this immediately.  It requires working up to a substantial income, being diligent, productive, finding a popular topic and more.

A guest post, 5 Things to Know When Starting Your Blog, by Adrienne Carlson at Daily Blog Tips contains some great advice for bloggers who, wish to develop this type of writing into a career, or at least an income stream.  Adrienne helps your recognize the realities of blogging so you can set up a plan.

What have you learned about blogging?  Is it a career for you?  A hobby?  A way to promote your business?

    Hi Mary Emma Allen,

This is an email from an Australian “Baby Boomer”. I virtually stumbled across your blogs (love them!) while doing research for our new online-magazine.

About the 5 realities of blogging:

    1. For me, blogging is a hobby and, hopefully a new late life career. We put our baby to life three days ago, and I do not expect to earn a lot with it, at least not right away.

    2. It is something my heart beats for. We put a lot of research into it. Our mag is a Baby Boomer lifestyle mag and caters for a niche. The underlying philosophy: “Embrace the changes of your life”.

    3. I worked as a journalist in Europe and in Australia. What I never liked about it was the fact that you really cater for advertising clients, not for readers. However, I have the dream of getting advertising clients that sell ethical stuff, such as cruelty free creams or similar things.

    5. As I am realistic about income opportunities, I am also looking for casual work (hard to find, here in Australia younger people are still preferred.

Was this the kind of stuff you wanted to know?

Thank you for a lot of interesting stories
    Ilona

  2. Thanks for the tips. #3 was especially true. While making money from blogging is possible, patience and passion are the winning ingredients to make it work in your favor! Thanks for a realistic perspective on reaching your dreams in the world of blogging.
