Travel – the Lure of the Ages
August 2, 2008 by Mary Emma Allen
Travel – the lure of distant lands, the desire to see around the next bend, the call of the unknown, the inability to stay in one place has affected humans from time unknown. Some people, though, desire to stay at home, while others tour the globe.
Nowadays, we can experience both by working at home in travel related occupations or leaving the familiar, yet still remain attached to a home based business.
Travel has always called to me. I loved the forays into states around my New York State home that my family took when I was a child. After my husband and I married, his Air Force career involved living in the western United States. (Never abroad as we’d hoped though!)
My enjoyment of travel resulted in my being editor of a travel publication that covered New Hampshire, the state where we currently live. I learned from these assignments of the many interesting places close to home.
Currently I write Vagabond Traveler articles for Kathleen Walls’ American Roads Travel Magazine . (You’ll be reading about Katy and her travel book publishing business this month.) I encompass my research in my Country Kitchen newspaper column and Mary Emma’s Country Kitchen blog, as well as in settings for some of the stories I write. Everywhere I travel ultimately becomes inspiration for some type of writing.
When I’ve been at home too long (like this summer) I get the urge to see what lies over the next mountain. Fortunately my husband Jim likes to travel, too.
How do you incorporate travel into your business or make it your business?
