Are You An Early Bird Or A Night Owl Freelancer?

by Yvonne Russell on March 21st, 2008

There’s a discussion percolating at b5 media about which time of day we prefer to work as freelancers. The sub theme is whether it’s by choice or necessity.

I’m definitely a night owl, mostly by choice rather than necessity.

Freelance writer, Anne Wayman at The Golden Pencil prefers to work in the mornings, a time she grew to love from morning watch in her sailing days.

Jim Gordon at Boss Hatch in Morning vs Night People comes down on the side of nights saying,

The night is quiet, reserved, and boring enough for you to focus. There aren’t many distractions - and the distractions that DO exist can be filtered out.

Anne mentions her patterns have changed since having children. This is an interesting point. Mary Emma Allen, my co-blogger at Home Biz Notes, and a freelance writer says,

I write whenever and wherever I find time. I am an early riser, so often write then, if I’m not dashing off to substitute teach or catch a plane.

After my daughter was born…that’s when I realized if I wanted to be a published writer, I couldn’t write on my schedule, but whever I could fit it in and meet deadlines.

Also, as a newspaper reporter, I had to write when the stories broke and before the newspaper was wrapped up. So I don’t think there is any particular time I write better than another.

How About You?

  • What is your natural preference?

  • Do you need to compromise?

  • I’d love to hear your thoughts on when you work best and the realities of scheduling a freelance work day.

I prefer to write in the morning. I am a morning person and do my best work then. However, I can’t always find the time and will grab a moment whenever I find it. I often find myself writing at night after everyone is in bed. This surprises me because I normally “shut down” at 8:00. I guess writing and doing housework are two different things in my book.

    Hi Debbie
I agree about different types of work. Some work you can fit in between things.

Other times you need a straight run and take the time when you can get a block of time.

Thanks, Debbie, for visiting Home Biz Notes and sharing with us. I’ve found having deadlines, whether in my writing, quilting projects, preparing for a Beauty Break, etc. spurs me on to getting things done. Then it’s something I can’t put off and I have to find the time somewhere to work at it, whether in the morning (my preferred work time) or late evening and even wee hours of the night.

Yvonne, you’ve done a great job pulling information from various bloggers together for this post. I’m pleased my comment at Anne’s The Golden Pencil blog was useful…or should I say, inspirational.
