Australia Kicks Off Earth Hour - Will You Take Part?

by Yvonne Russell on March 29th, 2008

Australia kicked off Earth Hour in 2007 when 2.2 million Sydnesiders switched off their lights for one hour at an agreed time.

In 2008, Earth Hour has gone global. At 8 p.m. March 29th in your time zone, the idea is you hit the lights at home or at your business, and switch off any non essential electrical appliances. It’s a way to raise awareness about going green.

Some city landmarks will be dimmed with only essential lights. The Sydney Opera House and The Sydney Harbour Bridge are two icons which are going green to honor Earth Hour.

What’s happening in your area?
Will you take part?

No, I won’t be participating in the second greatest hoax in the world. Let the Libs conspire to tax the human population for respiration, transportation, and even digestion, I will have no part in their lunacy!

Robert - One thing I’m curious about… I always thought it took more power to switch lights back on again than actually running them for the hour, or is that only fluorescent lights?

I’d love someone to correct me or clarify this. If that is true, then I guess it’s more a symbolic awareness raising gesture.

Some cynics scoff or argue it’s the wrong approach. It’s certainly not enough on its own to prevent climate change and other environmental problems from reaching calamitous proportions, we all understand that.

Mostly it’s a matter of being conscious that, with electricity, the more we use, the more damage we cause.

Events like this remind us all that there’s no such thing as a free kilowatt

Hey Susanna - great to see you here!

    It certainly has raised awareness.

I think it’s great that because of the web, the word can spread more easily and events such as these can become global.
