Change in Regulations Can Change Home Business

December 10, 2006 by Mary Emma Allen

Changes in regulations governing our home businesses can change the nature of our businesses…and even put us out of business. This may involve the materials we use, the way we sell, the place where we conduct business, the taxes we pay, etc.

Take the new regulation in New York City whereby the Board of Health has initiated banning trans fat in foods sold in restaurants, delicatessans, bakeries, etc….some of which may be operated or prepared at a home or establishment associated with a home business.

Whether this regulation will be challenged in court before it goes into effect in the summer of 2008 is another matter. If it is challenged, who will win? However, it does have food business owners considering what they will have to do to stay in business and whether they will be able to stay in business.

When you’re operating a home business, and any business, changes that are beyond your control can affect your enterprise in so many ways and crop up unexpectedly. These are matters you can’t plan for explicitly, but should have in the back of your mind with a possible game plan considered.
