Mystery shopping is a good supplement to a home business or it can be a home business in itself. As a mystery shopper, you are an independent home based contractor.

As a home business owner, mystery shopping can sharpen your business skills and savvy. Putting a business and staff under the microscope makes you more conscious of what you could do better and what you are doing well in your home business.

Qualities Required In a Mystery Shopper

  • keen observer
  • flexible hours
  • able to act natural and not give the game away
  • able to think on the spot
  • methodical and accurate in your reporting

Mystery Shoppers - Retail Sleuths
I have been on the retailer side of the fence with mystery shopping. When I owned a bookstore, we were offered a free mystery shopping visit. We were told it would be anytime within a two week time frame. Knowing that someone was going to report on us made us very conscious of everything in the store.

Mystery Shopping - Details Are Everything
Later we found the first contact had been a phone enquiry, followed by a store visit the next day. Luckily, we passed with flying colors. They even commented on the store assistant’s shoes, so obviously details count.

I’ve always been fascinated by mystery shopping and wouldn’t mind signing up, just to try it. Maybe it’s the detective element of checking on things, taking notes surreptiously and reporting back.
