Respond to Your Home Business Blog Visitors & Customers

by Mary Emma Allen on July 5th, 2007

“Mary, I appreciate you responding to my comments on your blog by e-mail, as well as on the blog,” a viewer mentioned.  “I feel as though I know you.”

I hadn’t thought much about it before this.  However, I wasn’t sure whether my viewers who leave comments stop back to see if I have responded.  So I thought I should let them know I appreciate their stopping by.  Also, it’s important to get back to them, I feel,  if they are asking questions.

(I’ve also noticed that bloggers who have a many comments on their blog usually try to respond to everyone.  And some have responded to me personally as well.)

This could be one way you develop a network and satisfied customers when your blog is connected to your business.  Let them know you are concerned enough to find answers, take care of their concerns, and develop  rapport

I suppose this practice  also may be something that was ingrained in me years ago.  My mother had us children sit down at the dining table with pen and note paper the day after Christmas, birthdays, and other occasions when we received gifts.  A “thank you” was expected.  So perhaps it seems just simply sign of appreciation to touch bases with people who visit my blog.

Thank you also seems reasonable when someone purchases from you in person.  If you have their address, a follow-up would be a good idea.  This could be by a note or by e-mail.  It will depend, however, on the type of purchase.  Something very inexpensive may not necessitate a response.  Building customer relations is good for your business and often leads to friendship, too.

What are your thoughts about this?

Mary, I think you’re absolutely right! We’ve lost a lot in our society and some of that which we’ve lost includes common courtesy and the personal touch. I was surprised and pleased when I received your e-mail in response to my comments here.

Mary Emma - This must be telepathy! I just posted at my blog about a new movement called I Reply. You just add a button to your blog to let readers know that if they take the time to comment you will reply… such a simple but brilliant idea.

I agree that commenting and replying is a two way thank you as well as adding to the blog conversation. You’ve taken it one step further with emails where appropriate.

Laura, thanks for visiting and commenting. It was you who got me thinking about this topic when you mentioned how much you appreciated my personal e-mails. (I sort of paraphrased you in the blog!) This was something that was natural to me, but your comment made me realize my readers did appreciate the gesture.

Yes, Yvonne, it must be telepathy. I’ve read your blog and find the I Reply movement very interesting. I like to add in the e-mails, where appropriate or possible, because I’m not sure those who comment will go back and read to see if I’ve answered them. Also, if they have a question or need information, I like to make sure they receive it.
