Seeking Home Business Typing Opportunities

One of our readers mentioned she wanted to start a typing business at home and wondered how to begin. With students learning typing in schools, often beginning in third grade and doing much of their written work on the computer, there aren’t the number of people unable to type nowadays that there once were. You may need skills other than simply being a good typist to develop a successful business. Can you do bookkeeping, medical transcription, proofreading, editing, ghost writing, researching? You also may need some design skills.

With this in mind:

*Check your local area. Are there businesses that outsource? Is there a college nearby with students who need help finalizing and formatting their papers.

*Check online. Anne Wayman’s The Golden Pencil regularly lists writing and editing jobs. Craig’s List has job listings.

*Look for writers’ organizations in your area or online. Someone may want assistance with retyping a manuscript or proofreading.

If you’ve developed a successful business utilizing your typing skills, would you like to share some ideas to help our reader?

Great tips! I especially like the focus on other skills. Many freelancers now have to be able to show “added value,” and developing skills beyond typing only is a good way to do that. One of the blogs I write for requires that I be adept with PhotoShop, while another client I helped with editing/rewriting an eBook wanted me to be able to turn it into a PDF eBook and insert pictures, re-doing the layout.

You also need some marketing skills. Go to local businesses and ask if they need typing done. Try the local copy shop, attorneys, other professionals.
