My tendency is to want to get things out of the way as they come up…. emails especially. An email sitting there unanswered is like a ringing phone.
Hoping to maintain (often regain) control over my inbox, I just want to deal with it, tick it off the list and move on.
The trouble is it’s not always so easy or so quick. As you know, work related emails often generate other tasks which take you away from what you were doing.

Cartoon – Email Dangers Of Hitting “Reply To All” Without Thinking

We’re talking productivity at Home Biz Notes this month.
How many times have you had irrelevant emails clog up your inbox because senders were too quick to hit the Reply To All button instead of just Reply on a group email?
I’m working hard on taming my emails, so I can really identify with the cartoon below. One ill considered round of “Reply To All” emails is all it takes to undo my good work.

Taming My Email Overload – Early Steps Are Paying Off

Earlier in March I vowed to take small steps to tame my email overload. I’m pleased to report it’s going well.
Step 1:
I’ve unsubscribed to most of my RSS and email feeds. I notice some don’t have an unsubscribe option, so these are proving more tricky.
Step 2:
I’ve also unsubscribed to all my Google Alerts. This takes care of about 60 emails per day.
Step 3:
I’ve deleted all my empty, duplicate and obsolete email folders. Why I had them in the first place, I’m not sure.
Taming my email overload will be a big job, but I’m committed to it. I’ll report back …read more
