What’s Sport Got To Do With It? Sports Terms in Business
August 10, 2008 by Yvonne Russell
With Olympic fever in the air, I thought it would be timely to encore and highlight one of our favorite sports related Home Biz Notes posts.
There are a lot of parallels between business and sport, and it’s interesting that a lot of the terminology we use in everyday business are sports terms.
- Hit a home run
- Carry the ball
- Slam dunk
- Always on the ball
- Game plan
- King hit
- Three strikes
- Run with it
- Play hardball
- Call the shots
- Team player
Can you think of any others sports terms used in everyday business? I’d love you to add your suggestions in the comments.
I am a keen basketball follower, having played myself. I’ve coached teams, and clapped my hands till they hurt when cheering for my son’s team. So I was thrilled to discover Ladies Court, a women’s basketball blog at b5’s Sports Channel.
- Check out Olympics coverage at the Sports Channel at Light The Torch
- Will you be taking time out from your business to watch the Olympics?

I’ve also heard that team sports as a child prepare one for teamwork in the business world as an adult.
That makes perfect sense, Laura.
The give and take of team work and moving towards a common goal (there’s another sports term used in business!) certainly applies to both team sports and business.
Thanks for your input.
Unfortunately we can’t watch the Olympics at our home because we get only one TV channel, and it’s not the one doing the coverage. My granddaughter is trying to get some of the replays online, but apparently our older computers/laptops aren’t adequate for all of it. We’re still trying!
