9 Considerations When Starting a Home Business

by Mary Emma Allen on June 13th, 2009

After pursuing various home businesses, sometimes two or three at one time and other times one alone, I’ve developed some guidelines to consider when you are thinking about starting your own.

Some of these may apply to your business and interests; some may not.  However, as you consider them, you might formulate some ideas that will get you thinking whether or not you’re suited to a home business.  Or will help you put together a home business plan.

  1.  Will you be able to keep yourself at work in a home atmosphere so you will complete your orders on time and stay on schedule?
  2. Do you like to work at home or do you need to be with people?  Generally home businesses tend to be solitary enterprises, unless you have a walk-in shop in your home.
  3.  Take stock of your interests and abilities.  Can any of them be turned into a home based enterprise?
  4.  See what other people in your area are doing.  Is there need for another service or product like theirs, if yours is similar and your customers will be from the local area rather than internet based?
  5.  If no one has a business like yours, is there a market for your product or service…either locally or wider spread if you’re utilizing the Internet.
  6.  Research the market potential before investing too heavily in supplies.
  7.  Do you have a work area where you’ll be undisturbed or can leave your projects spread out when you finish for the day?  This need not be an entire room.  But it is much more efficient and easier to work productively if you have your own space away from sticky jam and peanut butter fingers.  If you don’t have your own space, don’t give up.  Simply work toward that goal.
  8. Do you have some idea what your expenses will be?
  9. Have you figured out what your income potential is and whether it’s realistic?

Do you have some ideas to share that you’ve used to make your home business easier to manage and be productive?

    Great advice Mary Emma!

It’s important to plan your work-at-home business carefully. Make sure that you have a time and place to work. Most of all, it’s important to take your work-at-home commitments as seriously as any other commitment you might make.

Thanks, Laura, for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. You have some good advice…that home business owners should be serious about what they do. I’m also pleased you thought I had some good advice for my readers.
