Acts of Kindness Have Far Reaching Effects in Business and Life

Author/illustrator, Tasha Tudor, was a very gracious lady who gave me, an aspiring children’s writer, (as well as parents and aunt) an afternoon of her busy life many years ago.  I’m sure this wasn’t with the idea of promoting herself and her books when she invited us to tea at her farmhouse home.  However, her kindness has resulted in my spreading my delight with her.

*I’ve written reminiscenses about this visit in print and online media.  As a result many of my readers have responded and said this added to their enjoyment of Tasha Tudor.

*My daughter and I have purchased, not only her children’s books, but others written about her: The Art of Tasha Tudor by Harry Davis and Tasha Tudor’s Heirloom Crafts by Tovah Martin with photos by Richard W. Brown.

*I’ve been inspired and encouraged in my career whenever I’d read about her.

*My mother, too, often spoke of Tasha Tudor to others and related the afternoon of tea, toast, and conversation.

*I read her books aloud to youngsters when I substitute teach.

*I’ve related my experience when I teach writers’ workshops.

*I’m telling the story yet again here at Home Biz Notes about an amazing lady!

This doesn’t mean you have to invite every inspiring writer or young business owner to tea.  But you never know when kindness and even a small amount of gracious attention may have a ripple effect in your life and the lives of others.

Have you had an instance of kindness that inspired you?

I always go blank when asked questions like this. I know there have been plenty of kind acts that’ve inspired me, but I can’t seem to think of a single one!

Sometimes we realize the inspiration as the years go by, Alicia. My visit with Tasha Tudor was enjoyable, exciting, and encouraging at the time. It’s been as the years go by that I realize the longer lasting effects on my life. When I learned of Ms. Tudor’s death this summer, my thoughts about her act of kindness to an aspiring author crystalized. I only hope, somehow, that she knows how she influenced my life and others.
