Does an Eating Disorder Interfere with Your Home Business?

by Mary Emma Allen on October 10th, 2007

Eating disorders can affect anyone, male and female and almost every age.  Often these conditions interfere with one’s ability to work well at their business, their craft, their profession.  These disorders generally range from eating too much and of the wrong type of food to eating too little.  Any of these can play havoc with your health, lead to other situations and cause you to be less productive.  (I know…I’ve been there…read below.)

New Eating Disorder Blog

If you’re experiencing any of these situations and desire to learn more about eating disorders or find someone who understands what you’re going through, visit the new b5media blog, Breaking the Mirror by Julia Anna.  She is a recovering anorexic and shares her story, as well as provides resources.   Julia Anna also discusses the overeating that affects people on the other side of the eating disorder spectrum.

Personal Experience with Anorexia

I’ve lived with anorexia since I was 20 years old. (I’m a grandmother now!)  That was before the doctors labeled it and really knew much about the condition.  I’ve learned to control it, but must constantly be on guard that anorexia doesn’t control me again.  I’m  finding Julie Anna’s blog very informative and am learning to understand myself better.

Mary Emma - This is a very important topic. Great to see that there’s a blog devoted to it, and thanks for sharing your personal story.

As an ex bookseller working in the psychology and social work areas, I know the book you recommend was widely used too.

Great post! I have struggled with eating disorders myself (and am blessed to have been delivered from them for some years now).

I’d say that any type of health problem or disorder can affect everything you do - including your work!

Wow, Mary Emma. What a courageous post.

I struggled with an eating disorder for years. It took me awhile to realize that it was never about the food. Eating disorders tend to be about find some sense of control - and that’s an incredibly important issue in running a business.

I am so glad you find the blog useful! That is why I write it, to help and support other eating disorder sufferers. My ED has had a tremendous impact on my work. It is easy to understand how leaving my job for 3 months of in-patient treatment effected my career, but I think the day-to-day impact was far greater. Staying healthy, both in mind and body, is so important.
