First Appearances of a Home Business Are Important

by Mary Emma Allen on August 22nd, 2007

The appearance of your blog and your business say much about you.  First impressions are important.  Whether it’s a shop in your home or web site or blog, do they give the impression you want customers to perceive?

The old adage, “You only have one time to make a first impression,” still holds true.  Even in these days when much business is done online and customers don’t physically see you when doing business with you, there are still ways that you give an impression.

*Your blog and/or web site don’t have to be flashy, but should give the impression you want your customers to perceive of you.

*Even if you’re dealing with customers mainly online, you still may have to talk with them occasionally on the phone.  (I purchased something online that had a flaw, so I called the toll free number listed.  The customer service representative was very friendly…I could almost “hear” a smile in his voice…handled my problem competently, and left me with the feeling I’d do business with that company again.)  So, smile when you answer your phone or talk with customers…even when you don’t feel like it.

*Your packaging speaks of your professionalism.  I received an item today in a cut-down, folded over and taped box from  with the labels from another company.  Although the item seems as described online, I wonder about the company.  I don’t have the impression of them that their web site gave.  (This experience also caused me to resolve I will not reuse envelopes and boxes for business.  They don’t give the aura of success and competency.)

*If you have people coming to a shop in your home, is it neat and clean and professional looking?  If you produce items there, your workshop may look as though you work there, but it still can be tidy.

At Daily Blog Tips we find an interesting article, Dress Your Blog for Success, that relates to this topic and gives some hints on dressing your blog [business] for success as well as yourself.

“Not everyone can be an executive at a large corporation.  Likewise, not just anyone can be a successful blogger in a crowded market.  Give yourself the appearance of success and you’ll be one step closer to achieving it.”

Well stated!

Every thing you are speaking about is called “Moments of Truth”. Every touch point that a customer or potential customer has with your organization speaks to who your organization is. If you have the wrong person answering your phones, or you didn’t take the time to proofread the brochures or flyer that is being sent out to your customers, allows them to form an opinion about your organization. VERY good stuff!

Also, one of the things I have been learning about is personal brand. All that you have communicated in this post will help define your personal brand.
