Home Businesses I’ve Pursued

July 13, 2009 by Mary Emma Allen

As I browsed through the columns I’d proposed for the newspaper series, mentioned in the July 7th blog post, Opportunities Present Themselves Years Later, I realized I have been involved in numerouis home business ventures over the years.  Some I operated individually, others simultaneously.  They would vary as we moved to different states due to my husband’s work.  Generally I was pursuing a number of ventures that would bring in extra income, yet allow me to work from home.  Sometimes I had a job outside the home, too.

 These included:

  •  Dressmaking and alterations
  • Oil and watercolor painting on commission
  • Greeting card design
  • Freelance writing
  • Publicity work for businesses
  • Typing and bookkeeping for a business
  • Jewelry making
  • Quiltmaking
  • Sewing children’s clothing for a shop
  • Teaching writing in schools
  • Conducting quiltmaking workshops
  • Blogging

At one time I had a dress and gift shop in our home.  The clothing and gifts were items my daughter and I made.  At the same time I did dressmaking and alterations.

What types of businesses have you pursued from home?  Do you feel it’s better to concentrate solely on one, or go where the market dictates?
