Are You Harnessing The Power Of Social Media For Your Home Business?

by Yvonne Russell on January 31st, 2008

If you have a web presence or use the internet, you will have heard the term “social media”, referring to networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn. But do you use them for your business?

The power of social media and Facebook for communication was brought home to me recently when 500 teens responded to a Facebook invitation at a suburban party. My colleagues tell me that it is also a powerful business tool, not just locally but globally. What is your potential market? They’ve convinced me to give it a try, and I’ll report back.

Over To You

  • Are you on ?
  • How do you use it for your business?
  • How does it compare to specific business oriented social media such as LinkedIn?

Personally I’ve been trying to ignore the Facebook/MySpace crowd of sites, however recently one of my relatives managed to con us all into joining Facebook for an extended family network thing.

I have to say, having now used Facebook for a few weeks - it’s about as superficial as I feared. However that hasn’t stopped me from trying out it’s internal AdWords-a-like PPC system. So far not much (read “anything”) to write home about, but it’s early days and I’m targeting a small user niche - Australian listed as dog owners.

    Hi Ben
I joined up too. I’m not convinced either, although I quite like the mini feed it shows of all my blog posts.

I belong to a business group which has a members only private discussion board on Facebook. This has proven to be a useful free way of communicating and keeping the discussion and links to resources in one place without having an actual forum.

I’m not familiar with the Facebook Adworks style system. I’ll check that out. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I recently signed up on Facebook, at first with some of the people at our church. Now I’ve found others I know who are there. I haven’t had time to explore or use it much, but think Facebook and others like it probably are the wave of the future. I’m also signed up on LinkedIn but haven’t utilized this either. I know I need to get more knowledgeable about social media to keep up with the Internet world around us.
