Books For The Home Business Owner…To Relax, To Learn, To Inspire

In her post, Buy Something Just for Yourself for Christmas, Yvonne Russell mentioned books and wondered what others would like to put on their list.   I listed books for home business owners in another post, Thursday Thirteen: 13 Books to Inspire the Home Business Owner.
Do you have books on your list you’d like to share?
In a comment on the Thursday Thirteen post, Laura Spencer of Work From Home Momma, said:
Great list! I love to read. I would also add “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. It’s about trying new things.
To Yvonne’s post, I added another book I’ve been reading:

Insurance, Taxes & Licensing Issues for a Home Business

This article in Business Week, Before Setting Up Shop on eBay, by Karen E. Klein, provides tips to consider about insurance, taxes, licensing, permits and other similar issues before setting up your Home Business.  Even though it may be an online business, rather than one with customers coming to a shop in your home, you may find several legal and regulatory matters to take care of first.
These regulations may vary from state to state, county to county, and even town to town.  However, it’s better to be aware of them before you begin.
Ms. Klein mentions the book, eBay for Dummies, by Marsha Collier …read more

Writing Press Releases for Home Business Promotion

One of the traditional methods of obtaining publicity for a business has been press releases, written by the business owner, or someone hired for them. (I once did this, on a freelance basis, for a real estate office, as well as write their ads.)  You can send these to print publications and online e-zines and web sites. However, how you write a press release determines whether it’s read by the appropriate person and used.
*If it’s well written and short, a publication may use the press release in its entirety.

Many Hobbyists Develop Home Businesses

I found, through the poll I conducted on this blog during the past month, that the readers who took time to check it out appear to be ones who are turning a hobby into a home business.  (I appreciate your checking out the poll and contributing.)
This isn’t to say they’re the only ones who read my blog nor the only ones who develop home businesses.  However, it seems to indicate that many people nowadays are turning to their hobbies when they consider joining the home business boom.
One definition of a hobby is something that a person does for pleasure …read more

Home Business Boom

According to economist/author Paul Zane Pilzer, “We’re in the midst of a boom in home based businesses and it shows no signs of slowing.”
He considers that a home based business has “the edge” over the traditional business. According to statistics Pilzer has researched, “Today more than 50% of Americans work either for themselves or for a small business.”
In his book, The Next Millionnaires, Pilzer looks at various aspects of the home based business in the Internet age and explains why the home business person can have an advantage.
So if you have a small business, or are looking at developing one, you’re in line with …read more

Considering Home Business Books

Considering Home Business Books

“That book was terrible.  It didn’t give me the information I needed to build my home business.”
“That was a great book,” another home business owner might say.  “It had a lot of good ideas that really got me on the right track.”
It occurred to me as I scanned reader reviews of books, the review will vary with the reader and what they’re looking for.  Many of these reviews didn’t mention the quality of writing and content from that aspect.  They were the reader’s personal response.
So when you do check out someone else’s opinion about a book, see where they’re coming from.  …read more
