Which Candidate Will Help Or Hinder Your Home Business?

by Mary Emma Allen on March 9th, 2008

With all the media flurry concerning the primary elections in the United States and the drop-out of presidential candidates as the voting for delegates to the conventions runs its course, you’re probably wondering which one will help or hinder me, home business owner.

Then you may ask, “Is it worth voting at all?”

However, I’ve always felt, even when my candidate of choice doesn’t win, I have no right to complain if I don’t vote…if I don’t make my voice heard somehow.

What concerns a home business owner?

With a home business, I’m looking at whether candidates really understand the plight of the business person.  Or are they looking at where they’ll gather the most votes, what they should say to influence the most people, how to manage the polls so it seems they’re ahead?  Do they truly mean what they say, or are they simply sounding good to gather votes?

For instance, I’ve heard two different views from one candidate concerning health care and health insurance.  This depended on what the candidate thought the particular audience wanted to hear.

You may not agree with a candidate on everything, but will this person try to do the most good for the country and for business (which furnishes the jobs and fuels the economy).  If candidates don’t understand business, try to alienate citizens from “big bad” business, then they may be selling the economy down the drain.

So as you listen to the candidates and their philosophies, how can you tell if they REALLY mean what they say?

ME, you’re more of an idealist than I. Whether local or Presidential, I’ve gotten to the point that where I believe candidates only stand by what they say as long as it’s expedient. When it’s not, they’ll flop to whatever position gets them reelected. Sad, I never used to be this cynical, but reality finally won out.

Miki, I don’t know that I’m an idealist and believe everything the candidates say. I agree that many say whatever will gain them votes at the time. However, I still don’t feel I can complain if I don’t vote. I’m also very concerned with candidates who have a charisma that sways the crowds to jump on the bandwagon almost blindly. What is the underlaying purpose of the candidate and is he/she controlled by an organization (furnishing money and propaganda) larger than themselves? Hitler had charisma. But after he swayed the crowds and came into power, they found he had a sinister agenda that may not have been evident when he was wooing them. They thought he offered change and a better life instead of absolute control.

ME, I totally agree about voting and have never missed. I used to tell my mom that when she first complained that there was no one worth voting for, so she didn’t and then complained for four years about the winner.

That said, I think most voters bring their own ideology to the table, whether it’s good for the “rest” or not doesn’t matter, since they care only for ‘people like themselves’ and vote for the candidate that spews an ideology that, at the least, is synergistic to their own if not the same.

Thanks, Moggy, for stopping by and sharing your views. It certainly is difficult to really know where most of the candidates stand.
