Dorothy Thompson – Home Business E-marketing Specialist…Part 1
May 1, 2007 by Mary Emma Allen
Dorothy Thompson wears many hats and seems to have found her niche as an e-marketing specialist, working from home to promote author’s books and schedule online, or virtual, book tours. I met Dorothy in an online group when I contributed to her book, Romancing the Soul, published by Zumaya Publications.
Never one to remain static, Dorothy then began writing a column about relationships and eventually an e-book about online marketing. (Learn more about her work as an author/editor/publisher at Mary Emma’s Potpourri of Writing during her own virtual book tour.)
I’ve been impressed with the way Dorothy adapts to change and isn’t afraid to adjust the focus of her career, as she develops her home business. (At present Dorothy is doing all of this parttime, since she also works outside the home.)
MEA: Dorothy, what do you call your main focus now in the writing/publishing/promoting world?
Dorothy: At the moment, I’m focusing more on a business I just got off the ground called Pump Up Your Book Promotion Virtual Book Tours. I saw a need and filled it. It’s a way to help my fellow authors. I help them, not just with their tours, but with everything concerning getting their book off the ground and into people’s homes.
If they don’t have a book blog, I help them set one up. If they need their web site optimized, I help them with that. If they need a book trailer, I’m onto it. I know how frustrating it is not to sell books, and I’ve found a way to sell them. But it takes a lot of hard work. Their success stories are what it’s all about.
MEA: You started out as a writer. What made you decide to focus on this aspect?
Dorothy: I’m still writing, but I’m fidgety. The virtual book tours give me an opportunity not only to help other authors, but it’s also a great home business. Actually it all began one night when one of my clients called to tell me she wanted me to help her sell her book…and she wouldn’t take no for an answer. She was even willing to pay me! I had never thought about doing what I love for money before. I had writen an e-book, A Complete Guide to Promoting & Selling Your Self-Published eBook, so I knew what it would take to promote online. I thought about this for a few days and agreed to represent her, thus earning my moniker, “e-marketing specialist.”
Then I got an e-mail from another author who had been frequenting my blog, and the subject line read, “Dorothy, you’re my hero.” How can you not smile after getting an e-mail like that? The surprising thing was she wanted me to represent her, too. That’s when I decided I better listen to these people!
A few weeks later, Pump Up Your Book Promotion Virtual Book Tours was born.
(In Part 2, I’ll share with you some more of Dorothy’s story and advice on when and why to start a home business. Even if you’re not in the writing/publishing field, you could utilize some of Dorothy’s advice and philosophy and apply it to your home business. )
